Last week was an epic week for Stuart Reid, team caption of local road racing squad HerbaLife/WHEELBASE.co.uk. It was clear that Reid, a local firefighter was finding form when he took a convincing victory in Lancaster at the Saltaire weekly cycle race on Tuesday 2/6/09.
The two big wins of the week came at the Newcastle City Centre criterium race, were the newly formed HerbaLife/WHEELBASE dominated the race and showed the four members racing working as a real team. On the final lap and after 50 minutes of intense racing Reid made his break in the final mile, Scott Thwaites from Leeds based team Crosstrax bridged the gap to him but it was Reid who was more explosive and took victory by one bikes length. Team mates Damian Smith and Andy Hawdon finished fourth and fifth respectively.
Sunday saw the annual Bob Swailes Memorial Road Race organised by Kendal based club Kent Valley take place on their Old Hutton course. The sun was shining and with only moderate winds it was to prove an epic days racing.
A field of 80 riders took to the course and immediately a small group of riders made a breakaway which gained 1 minute 20 seconds on the peloton. This break lasted for more than half the race and it was a massive effort off the front of the peloton by Lewis Craven, HerbaLife/WHEELBASE.co.uk, Grahame Sumner, Great Britain Fire Service and Adrian Lawrence, Lancashire RC to reel them back in. With two laps of the 70 mile circuit to go Stuart Reid, HerbaLife/WHEELBASE.co.uk attacked on the main climb towards Old Town, Adam Yates, Maxgear RT, Graeme Norman, New Brighton CC and Grahame Sumner, Great Britain Fire Service followed and the four riders rode clear and put time in from the bunch.
Like in Newcastle, Reid’s acceleration on the final climb was too much from Sumner and Stuart Reid, HerbaLife/WHEELBASE.co.uk took victory. A speedy perusing peloton swept up the remaining breakaway riders and Damian Smith, HerbaLife/WHEELBASE.co.uk and Lewis Craven of the same team won the bunch sprint after both riders giving high intensity blasts on the front.
